Spencer W. McBride

Historian of Early America

Spencer W. McBride has more than 10 years of experience conducting archival research that has shed new light on the American past. In addition to his work as a historian and documentary editor at The Joseph Smith Papers, he is engaged in researching and writing a book about Joseph Smith's failed presidential campaign in 1844 (under contract with Oxford University Press). Tentatively titled When Joseph Smith Ran for President: The Politics of American Religious Inequality, the book will use Smith's campaign as an entry-point to an examination of the political obstacles to universal religious liberty faced by groups outside mainstream Protestant Christianity.
